Hungarian Custard Slice – Krémes

Ingredients:

For the layers:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry

For the custard filling:

  • 1 liter milk
  • 200 g sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 packets vanilla pudding powder (or 60 g cornstarch)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the cream layer (optional):

  • 200 ml heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar

For topping:

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the puff pastry sheets separately until golden and crispy. Let cool.
  2. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, pudding powder (or cornstarch), and a little milk until smooth.
  3. Heat the remaining milk in a pot. When warm, slowly add the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
  4. Cook over medium heat until thick and creamy. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the hot custard over one layer of puff pastry in a tray and smooth the top.
  6. (Optional) Whip the cream with powdered sugar and spread over the cooled custard.
  7. Place the second puff pastry sheet on top.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for several hours until set.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar, slice carefully, and serve.
