🇭🇺 Hungarian Goulash (Gulyás)

🧾 Ingredients:

  • 700 g beef (cut into cubes)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 large onions (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 2 carrots (sliced)
  • 2 potatoes (cubed)
  • 1 tomato (chopped) or 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 green pepper (chopped)
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 1–1.2 liters water or beef broth

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Cook onions:
    Heat oil in a large pot and sauté onions until soft and golden.
  2. Add paprika:
    Remove from heat and stir in paprika to prevent burning.
  3. Add beef:
    Return to heat, add beef, and mix well to coat.

  1. Build the base:
    Add garlic, tomato, and green pepper. Cook for a few minutes.
  2. Season with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds.

  1. Simmer:
    Pour in water or broth, cover, and cook for about 1 hour.

  1. Add vegetables:
    Add carrots and potatoes, then cook for another 30–40 minutes until everything is tender.
