  • 1 kg freshwater fish (carp is traditional, cut into pieces)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp hot paprika (optional, for spice)
  • 1 tomato (chopped) or 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 green pepper (chopped)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 1–1.2 liters water

  1. Prepare the base:
    In a large pot, heat oil and sauté the chopped onion until soft.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in paprika quickly to avoid burning.

    Add fish pieces, tomato, and green pepper.
  2. Pour in water and add salt.

    Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for about 30–40 minutes.
