Hungarian Walnut Cake

🇭🇺 Hungarian Walnut Cake (Diós Sütemény / Diós Torta)

🧾 Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 150 g sugar
  • 120 g all-purpose flour
  • 4 eggs (separated)
  • 100 ml milk
  • 100 g butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt

For the cream (optional but recommended):

  • 200 g butter (softened)
  • 120 g powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder or melted chocolate

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prepare batter:
    Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg yolks one at a time, mixing well.
  3. Stir in milk and vanilla.

  1. Add dry ingredients:
    Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and ground walnuts.
  2. Fold into the batter.

  1. Whip egg whites:
    Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, then gently fold into the batter.

  1. Bake:
    Pour into a greased cake pan.

🔥 Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30–35 minutes until golden and set.


  1. Let cool completely, then slice into layers (optional).

  1. Prepare cream:
    Beat butter with powdered sugar and vanilla until fluffy.
  2. Add cocoa powder or melted chocolate.

  1. Assemble (optional):
    Spread cream between layers and over the cake.
