Ingredients

  • 12–14 sour cabbage leaves
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground pork
  • ½ cup uncooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ tsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried marjoram
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sauerkraut (for layering)
  • 4 cups tomato juice or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 smoked sausage (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix ground pork, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, marjoram, and egg.
  2. Place filling on each cabbage leaf. Fold sides in and roll tightly.
  3. Layer sauerkraut on bottom of pot. Add cabbage rolls seam-side down.
  4. Add sliced smoked sausage between layers (optional).
  5. Pour tomato juice over rolls. Add water if needed to just cover.
  6. Cover and simmer on low for 1½–2 hours.
  7. Serve hot with sour cream.
